Practical Skills

Stock Market Challenge helps pupils develop their skills and aptitudes and enrich their understanding of the world around them.  Children at this age have an instinctive understanding of how markets work and how the value of things changes according to external influences, from exchanging Gogos and Match Attax cards in the school playground to trading in Stock Market Challenge.

Aspects of the curriculum

The game enriches their literacy and numeracy and helps develop their key skills and aptitudes.  The resource supports several areas of learning, including Mathematical Understanding, English and Communication, Technology, Citizenship & Financial Capability.

A Bridging Project

Stock Market Challenge helps pupils prepare for the move up to secondary school in an engaging and imaginative way.  The resource is suitable for Key Stage 2 children who are beginning to think about the subjects and themes they will explore in Year 7.

Case Study

As part of the development of the primary version of the resource, Stock Market Challenge is currently being piloted by five schools in South Yorkshire.  Click on the case study tab and watch the videos to see how 5 Doncaster primary schools have been using the resource.

“Stock Market Challenge doesn't just teach young people about the world of finance – it’s much, much wider than that.  It encourages teamwork, communication and decision-making ability – skills which will be vitally important to them when they enter the world of work."

James Fox, Deputy Head, Writhlington School

"From entry level through to Masters programmes it gives students an understanding of the financial markets and creates an opportunity for them to test their skills and see how they work under pressure. It gives a reality which develops all sorts of entrepreneurial skills."

Lesley Hyder, Principal Lecturer, Southampton Business School

“This is a terrific resource – the simulation of the stock market and the presentation of information using newspapers and TV news, makes this a very convincing and exciting role-play, promoting quick thinking, decision making skills and enterprise.”

Quality Mark Assessor, Financial Capability, PFEG

“I went to the Stock Market Challenge hoping to learn about investments and the pressurized atmosphere of the stock exchange. I ended up having one of the best evenings since I've been at university. It was a frantic and testing event, but it was absolutely thrilling!”

Munro Stewart, Student, University of Dundee
