Work-related Learning

Work-related Learning

In its authentic recreation of a simulated working environment, Stock Market Challenge helps young people prepare for and learn about the world of work.  As an experiential learning activity, it fosters an understanding of the knowledge and skills relating to a particular business sector e.g. financial services. It has direct relevance to the world of work and supports the business sector in its need to create a world-class competitive workforce.

Business leaders, represented by the CBI, want young people to leave schools with the right skills for the workplace. Our collaborations with organisations such as Skills Development Scotland, Financial Sector Skills Council and Education Business Partnerships have helped us develop the resource in a way that makes a tangible contribitution to the skills agenda.

"There was such a buzz at the Stock Market Challenge. If a team was looking for something that is fun to do and related to financial services then this is a really good opportunity. I would encourage people to do it."

Kathryn McGown, Human Resources Consultant, Standard Life

"Stock Market Challenge just gets better and better each year. Tha atmosphere in the 'trading room' was electric and the students really got into the spirit of the event.  The School of Management is proud to support this project."

David Pritchard, Dean, Cardiff School of Management

“Stock Market Challenge doesn't just teach young people about the world of finance – it’s much, much wider than that.  It encourages teamwork, communication and decision-making ability – skills which will be vitally important to them when they enter the world of work."

James Fox, Deputy Head, Writhlington School

"This is an excellent programme which the students thoroughly enjoyed.  It offered learning opportunities which are difficult to provide in a normal school timetable."

Dermot Gallagher, Head of Business Studies, St. Brigid’s College
