Modern Languages

Available in French and Spanish, the Stock Market Challenge Dealing Room game provides a unique opportunity for language students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in an immersive environment.

With its online, multi-user capability the resource also facilitates links with international partner schools and is being used by teachers to help meet the requirement of the Comenius Project.

Bringing language learning to life

Stock Market Challenge offers Modern Foreign Language teachers a unique opportunity to enable their students to demonstrate their knowledge and understating in a unique and interesting way.

Schools can use the resource to help to help students absorb language skills needed for advanced level study, for example, the ability to understand and discuss statistics related to a country's economy with a partner school in that country.

Practical skills

The game’s news website helps develop techniques for skimming and for scanning written texts for information and the game requires students to summarise and report the main points of spoken or written texts.

Students will have to use and apply the target language creatively and imaginatively.  The resource requires students to respond to different types of spoken and written language and helps meet the requirement of using a range of resources, including ICT, for accessing and communicating information.

Aspects of the curriculum

Stock Market Challenge helps teachers deliver the requirement of communicating in the target language in pairs and in using classroom activities as an opportunity for spontaneous speech expressing and discussing personal feelings and opinions

The resource helps meet the requirement that students work in a variety of contexts, including everyday activities, personal and social life, the world around us, the world of work and the international world. Furthermore, schools can conduct bilingual sessions of the game with their partner schools to enrich their experience

Progression

It is important to have resources that encourage students to continue with the study of French or Spanish to GCE A level.

In terms of student satisfaction and increased numbers of students continuing to GCE A level, the most successful schools will be those where the content of lessons combines the application of the target language with grammar work linked to texts that stimulate the interest of the student, such as those found in the game.

Beyond the resource

The resource provides a platform for extending learning opportunities giving students the confidence to approach the news media in another language.

It also enables schools to improve links with international partner schools through programmes such as the European Union’s Comenius project, which exists to develop knowledge and understanding amongst young people across Europe.

The Dealing Room game can be played at the same time in different languages which enables an exciting and dynamic interplay between two schools in different countries.
