On June 30 City University in London played host to 50 students from Morpeth School in Tower Hamlets as they competed in the Stock Market Challenge.
The game was the main feature of a Financial Services Skills Council Directions careers initiative – to develop and enhance students' understanding of careers in the financial services, accounting and finance sectors. The students took part in the event at the Northampton Square campus.
The day started at 10am with a career presentation, followed by a creative Accounting activity delivered by the ICAEW. The students were then directed to an ICT suite where they divided into teams to compete against each other in the Dealing Room game.
It was a test of the students’ skills in teamwork, anaylsing information and arithmetic, encouraging them to think on their feet and to make decisions. They were mentored by student ambassadors from Cass Business School.
Jenny Barber, Head of Careers and Higher Education at the Financial Services Skills Council, said, “We are pleased to have had the opportunity to introduce Stock Market Challenge to Morpeth School. It is very relevant to these students and will provide a stimulating platform to introduce them to the financial services, accounting and finance sectors, a significant employer in the City."

Shanead Friel, Head of Business Education, St. Columba's High School, Clydebank
“I went to the Stock Market Challenge hoping to learn about investments and the pressurized atmosphere of the stock exchange. I ended up having one of the best evenings since I've been at university. It was a frantic and testing event, but it was absolutely thrilling!”
Munro Stewart, Student, University of Dundee
“The event has really enhanced my interest in both investment banking and a potential career within Citi Group. This is a great way to meet company representatives.”
Victoria Emery, Accounting & Finance MSc, Northern Ireland
"Stock Market Challenge allows pupils to apply their understanding of mathematics to a real life situation in such a creative and refreshing way. I have written this into the scheme of work for all our KS4 classes. It's FAB!"
